Apparently, it doesn't take a biochemist to formulate an energy drink. No, according to Starbucks, any guy off the street is qualified. At least that's whose opinion mattered most when the coffee giant recently created the ingredient list for its own concoction.

"There are many energy ingredients on the market, and B vitamins, guarana, and ginseng are the ones our customers are most familiar with," says Ruby Amegah, product development manager for the team behind the Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee. Which perhaps in large part explains why the company chose them; It's smart marketing.

Trouble is, by letting consumer research influence ingredient lists, energy-drink companies are helping popularize exotic-sounding compounds that even scientists don't yet fully understand. The approach has worked: Last year, Americans spent $4.2 billion on these supposedly high octane elixirs. And that's probably why manufacturers haven't strayed far from the best-selling recipe they used when the first energy drinks took off a dozen years ago.

It's a formulation that includes a hefty dose of caffeine and sugar combined with smaller amounts of seemingly obscure substances, most notably guarana, ginseng, and taurine.

But do these beverages really energize your body and sharpen your mind? Or should you can the energy drinks for good? To help you separate the science from the sales pitch, I analyzed five key ingredients in the market's most popular potions.

Caffeine: What is it? Caffeine is a chemical compound that stimulates your central nervous system. Most energy drinks contain between 140 and 170 milligrams (mg) of caffeine in a 15- or 16-ounce can.

Does it work? Java junkies certainly think so. As for the science, an Austrian study showed that men who swallowed 100 mg of caffeine had a bigger boost in brain activity after 20 minutes than those who took a placebo.

Is caffeine safe? The most caffeine-packed energy drink contains the equivalent in caffeine of about two 8-ounce cups of coffee. If downing that much joe doesn't make you jittery, then quaffing a can shouldn't pose a problem. Of course, if you combine that with other caffeinated beverages throughout the day, then the sum total stimulation could cause headaches, sleeplessness, or nausea.

Glucose: What is it? Sugar. Sucrose, another ingredient you'll often see on energy drink labels, is a combination of fructose (the natural sugar found in fruit) and glucose. Many energy drinks contain 50 to 60 grams (g) of glucose or sucrose in a 16-ounce can.

Does Glucose work? Your body runs mainly on glucose, so topping off your tank with the sweet stuff should theoretically provide an instant boost.

Is Glucose safe? Dumping empty calories down your gullet is never a great idea, and some energy drinks contain nearly as much sugar as a 20-ounce soda. Then there's the fact that a sudden infusion of glucose can cause your blood sugar and insulin levels to skyrocket, signaling your body to stop incinerating fat.

Guarana: What is it? Guarna is a South American shrub. One seed has caffeine content of 4 to 5 percent, while a coffee bean has 1 to 2 percent. The amount of guarana in a 16-ounce energy drink ranges from a minuscule 1.4 mg to as much as 300 mg.

Does Guarana work? Yes, if you don't set the bar too high. Is Guarana safe? Scientists at Florida's Nova Southeastern University conducted tests and concluded that the amounts of guarana found in most energy drinks aren't large enough to cause any adverse effects.

Ginseng: What is it? An extract made from the root of the ginseng plant. Panax ginseng is the species most commonly used. The ginseng content in energy drinks typically ranges between 8 mg and 400 mg in 16 ounces.

Does Ginseng work? Not if you're hoping for energy to burn. However, ginseng is known to boost brainpower. Is it safe? Since the amount of ginseng in an energy drink is minimal, harmful effects are unlikely. And while there have been some reports of negative side effects from ginseng - diarrhea, for example - Scholey points out that those occurred in people taking 3 g a day.

Taurine: What is it? One of the most abundant amino acids in your brain, where it can act as a neurotransmitter a chemical messenger that allows your cells to communicate with one another. Does Taurine work? Scientists aren't sure, but it doesn't seem likely. When taurine is dumped into your bloodstream when you down a Red Bull, for instance, it can't pass through the membranes that protect your brain. Is taurine safe? Probably in small doses, but chug too many energy drinks and the picture becomes less clear.

Are you getting diminishing returns on your current fitness training program? Then Learn How to Go from Flab to Fab in Only 15 minutes a Day...

In working with my existing personal fitness clients at www.MyHomePersonalTrainer.com , I have learned some of the most common but correctable mistakes a lot of men and women make in trying to support their long term fitness and health goals.

1. Too much machine work A lot of women and men train using too often just their preferred machines, which limits their range of motion and does not work their muscles in an efficient and effective manner. Ultimately this can limit the engagement of small stabilizer muscles that give you maximum benefit throughout your fitness training program.

2. Not lifting enough weight A lot of women do not lift enough weights to engage their muscles for long-term muscle growth.

3. Working only half of your body A lot of men focus too much on just their upper body and end up mainly training their chest and arms, thus making their body parts look very unbalanced and disproportionate to each other.

4. Too many reps A lot of women do too many reps per set, once again not allowing their muscles the opportunity to grow and develop so that they can change their muscle/fat body composition.

5. Overtraining The benefits of resistance training, unlike cardiovascular work, come after the training is over. Sometimes people think more is better and in resistance training that is not always the case.

6. Not fueling their bodies for training Both before and after training. Your body is an engine that must be fed with high octane, good quality fuel to maximize your fitness results. Starving yourself before or after a fitness training workout limits your capacity to perform at peak levels

7. Training the same way Any fitness training program that is more than 4-6 weeks will not only get stale for you, but will provide you diminishing long term fitness results.

8. Cardio before weights Wearing yourself down prior to your resistance training workout with cardio can only reduce your opportunity to get the best possible training session

9. Steady as she goes A big mistake is keeping your fitness training pace always in moderate mode. Incorporating High Intensity Training is the way to keep it fresh, fast, and effective.

10. Cardio, cardio and more cardio Burning fat is a great thing, but burning muscle is a bad thing. Cardio is a good fat burner, but also can burn muscle if you over indulge.

The secret in developing the Perfect Personal Fitness Training Program begins with the following Flab to Fab Personal Fitness Training Tips.

1. Focus on the Four Major Muscles Groups Stay away from Isolation Exercises. Burn fat and build muscle when working those Major Large Muscle Groups more often.
1. Legs Squat

Perform Compound Exercises (Multi Joint movements) Working multi-joints at the same time provides maximum benefit to your muscles,

2. Chest Chest Press (Shoulder and Elbow Joint)
3. Back Bent Over Row (Shoulder and Elbow Joint)
4. Shoulders Overhead Press (Shoulder and Elbow Joint)

Perform Supersets No Rest Between 2 Exercises. Working more than one muscle with no break provides and efficient and effective workout.

1. Work opposing Muscle Groups
1. Chest then Back
2. Work alternating between Upper and Lower Body
1. Chest then Legs

Perform Circuit Training No Rest through your entire workout. Circuit Set Training turns your Fitness Training into High Intensity Resistance Training.

Hi,

Today I have a new resource to tell you about that will stop you
from making the common start-up mistake that KILLS many new
websites...

It's called the "Ebusiness Start-Up Handbook," and it's a
must-read for anyone who wants to build a profitable long-term
ebusiness on a solid foundation.

Download it, and you'll avoid wasting massive amounts of time and
money getting your new business started.

What I like most about this Handbook is that it uses simple
language and lots of examples and graphics to clearly explain the
step-by-step process you need to follow to find a lucrative
online market with minimal competition.

Start your website *without* doing this critical groundwork first,
and prepare for a long and costly battle...

You'll struggle to attract visitors, to get ranked in the search
engines, and to convert the few visitors you do get into buyers.

Worse, you could find yourself going head to head with the
Internet's toughest -- and most well-funded -- competitors, like
Amazon.com and eBay.

The "Ebusiness Start-Up Handbook" was produced by the experts at
the Internet Marketing Center, who have generated over $100
million in sales online, so you know you can trust their advice.

Turn Down the Suck in Fitness

Exercise is good for you - there's simply no doubt about it! However, I still meet clients on a daily basis who've vowed to dedicate themselves to an exercise program, only to quit after a month. Let's face it, North Americans start and stop their fitness programs more frequently than they change their underwear.

I understand that buying gym memberships and large pieces of fitness equipment is downright unaffordable to much of the population - especially when that membership looses itself in the back of your wallet or that high-tech treadmill is being used as the most expensive clothes rack your basement has ever seen.

When I became a certified personal trainer I soon learned after talking to clients, and seeing them come to the gym for a while only to suddenly disappear, that the key to a successful fitness program is fun! That's right exercise should be fun. I mean who ever said it should be a boring, tedious vacuum of your valuable time?

For some reason fitness has negative connotations for many new clients that I've met recently. I hear "exercise is just too boring" and "if I exercise I'll have no social life" all the time when I meet new clients. The fact is that we all lead very busy lives and exercise is often figured into it as an afterthought behind work, family, social outings and even poker night. So let's face it if exercise is just another leisure activity on your weekly schedule it has to be something you'll look forward to or you simply won't stick to it. That's why I encourage everyone who visits my website, fitnessgear101.com, to switch up the word 'exercise' for ‘leisure activity'. After all, you would be certain to pen a social outing with your girlfriends into your daily planner, so why not get the girls together and go to a spin class or on a power walk?

In this day and age, fitness takes up on average an hour, 4-days a week of the average person's time. So basically it has to be fun or people simply won't put in that extra hour. The good news is that entertaining workouts have hit the fitness scene in a big way this year. Many are largely dance-inspired - including belly dancing, cardio strip, pole dancing and salsa dance workouts.

I tried a pole dancing-strip cardio workout with a few of my girlfriends a couple weeks ago, and trust me it had me laughing so hard, that alone gave my abdominal muscles a workout. We started with pole dancing - which is far more challenging than it looks. Believe me, it takes a large amount of upper body strength to keep yourself suspended from a pole, and swinging yourself around it is reasonably cardiovascular. The cardio strip was more like the sweaty high-intensity cardio workouts that I'm used to. The workout mimicked exotic dance movements, so the hip thrusts, kicks and abdominal twisting works parts of your body you didn't know existed.

See, there's absolutely no reason why fitness can't be fun. Start by searching your local community centers and gyms for an activity that you really enjoy. Try tango lessons with your significant other, a bonding session of mother/baby yoga, a high-octane cardio kickboxing session with your best friend - all followed by a healthy lunch. By turning simple daily activities into something more rewarding, you get your fun social gathering and your workout in too!
